Astrology Newsletter: June 2010
Number 75
Astrologically things are continuing to ‘hot up’ with the players in the major configuration of the year falling into alignment. The so called Cardinal Cross or Cardinal Climax of late July / early August is gathering momentum as Jupiter moves into Aries and conjuncts Uranus and the New Moon, Full Moon and Solstice charts activate the configuration.
For those of you who are early risers, there is an opportunity to see Jupiter conjunct the Moon… look to the west in the hours before sunrise and enjoy.
Blessings

1. June Overview
Pluto is retrograde all month and Saturn turns direct on May 31.
All dates and times are for Australian Eastern Time.
- June 6: Jupiter to Aries
- June 7: Mars to Virgo
- June 8: Jupiter conjunct Uranus
- June 10 Mercury to Gemini
- June 12: New Moon in Gemini
- June 14: Venus to Leo
- June 21: Sun to Cancer - Winter Solstice
- June 25: Mercury to Cancer
- June 26: Full Moon in Capricorn: Lunar Eclipse
- June 28: Saturn quincunx Neptune
The Cardinal Cross that is the major astrological feature of 2010 continues to take form and will reach a peak during July and August. The June New Moon, Full Moon and Solstice charts activate this configuration, suggesting that June may be quite a turbulent and eventful month.
Jupiter moves into Aries on June 6 and conjuncts Uranus on June 8, marking the beginning of a new 13 year Jupiter / Uranus cycle. The Jupiter/ Uranus cycle is said to be about social [Jupiter] and technological [Uranus] innovation and break-throughs. Jupiter will conjunct Uranus three times over the next nine months
- June 8
- September 19
- February 4
During the next nine months Jupiter will act as a catalyst for the energy of Uranus in Aries [although the September conjunction slips back into Pisces so I will discuss that in the September newsletter], much as it did when it joined Pluto in Capricorn in 2008, signalling the Global Financial Crisis. We may hear of some remarkable scientific discoveries and breakthroughs, but there is also the potential for conflict as the Arian archetype resents any restrictions on its freedom. Uranus in Aries presents an image of rugged individualism. At its best it is the true individual and pioneer who is unswayed by mass thinking and is able to move forward into unchartered territory and be true to their own inner voice. At its most negative it can be the individual [or group or nation] who is totally egocentric and aggressively pursues their own interests. Uranus in Aries calls us all to honour our individuality and need for freedom and self expression but to do this in a way that does not negate others needs and rights.
Here is a list of Arian qualities, events and structures that may come to prominence.
- Bravery and heroic endeavours
- Competition
- Conflict, War Aggression
- Auto industry [warrior’s chariot!!]
- Metal industry – BHP, Rio etc
- Armed forces, Police, Fire services
- Violent crime
- Industrial concerns, including disputes
- Opposition forces
- Bravery, courage
- Getting moving, taking action
- Pioneering and moving into the unknown
The New Moon in Gemini on June 12 forms a stressful t-square with the Saturn / Uranus opposition, suggesting an atmosphere of tension where we may struggle with a desire for change and battle with a fear that may paralyse us. In this opposition we see the forces of change, democracy, equality and universal brother/sisterhood [Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius] clashing with Saturn [the ruler of Capricorn], the status quo, tradition, conservatism, fear and rigidity. The opposition is calling for a re-balancing of these energies collectively and within each individual.
The New Moon therefore calls us to find a bridge between the past and the future, between our need for freedom, change and innovation and our need for stability. We need to find responsible ways to embrace change, let go our fear of the unknown and be willing to pioneer the creation of new life structures. We also need to make sure we don’t go overboard in our desire for change [Uranus] and throw the baby out with the bath water. We need to examine our lives and see what is useful and needs to be retained, but the opposition does suggests the form rather than the essence may need to undergo a process of re-evaluation so it can move us forwards in a new way.
The Full Moon on June 26 is also a Partial Lunar Eclipse and aligns with the Cardinal Cross - actually forming a Grand Cross - making this one of the most dynamic lunations for the year. The eclipse occurs at night along the eastern coast of Australia and will be visible if there is not heavy cloud cover. The duration of the eclipse is 82 minutes and during that time part of the Moon will disappear in the earth’s shadow.
The Eclipse takes place in the sign of Capricorn with the Sun in opposing Cancer. Here is a summary of the planetary aspects that are part of the Eclipse chart
- the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn
- the Sun conjuncts Mercury and Juno in Cancer
- Jupiter and Uranus square the Sun and Moon from Aries
- Saturn squares the Sun and Moon from Virgo.
This means that 7 out of 10 major planets are involved in this stressful configuration. [The only major planets not involved are Venus, Mars and Neptune… but Mars will conjunct Saturn and join the action by the end of July.
It is challenging to actually contemplate and delineate such a potent chart. It may symbolize an emotional response [personally and collectively] to the challenges that the global and local communities are facing. It will be very potent for anyone born 5 days either side of June 26 and for anyone with planets in late degrees of mutable signs [Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces] or early degrees of cardinal signs [Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn].
Saturn will quincunx Neptune on June 28 for the third and final time – the first exact hit was on October 13 and the second was on May 3 - a tense aspect that symbolizes the need to make adjustments. Saturn and Neptune are never very comfortable companions and this aspect will activate the tension that exists between the two of them. Saturn [think Capricorn] is the Reality Principle and seeks to create order, form and structure and is concerned with duty and responsibility. Neptune [think Pisces] is a transpersonal energy concerned with imagination, creativity, spirituality and the unseen realm. Saturn demands we become grounded and create clear boundaries while Neptune invites us to lose ourselves in daydream, reverie and imagination. Negative Saturn may criticize or judge our desire for Neptunian escapism and surrender while the Negative Neptune may inappropriately dissolve our boundaries and get us into trouble. As with all astrological aspects this is not an either or option: we need to find ways to honour both or one may get the upper hand and ‘act out’. A productive synthesis of these energies could be found through scheduling time [Saturn] for Neptunian activities like meditation, creative work, music and daydreaming or just doing nothing and surrendering to the moment.
2. The Winter Solstice: 9.28pm on June 21 [AEST]
The Winter Solstice or Cancer Ingress of the Sun marks the time of the longest nights and shortest days when the Sun is reborn from the darkness. The times of sunrise and sunset appear to stand still for two weeks before and after the peak time of June 21, before the time of light begins to lengthen markedly. The Winter Solstice therefore symbolizes the rebirth of the light and the divine spark within us all. It marks the beginning of a new solar cycle and is time for those of us who live in the Southern Hemisphere to create our New Year resolutions and reflect on what we want to achieve in the coming year.
The Solstice comes a few days before the Full Moon on June 26 and all the aspects mentioned in that chart are active in the Solstice chart with the exception of the Moon conjunct Pluto.
The Solstices are currently aligned with the Galactic Plane and for us here in the Southern hemisphere the Winter Solstice is near the Galactic Anti-Centre. This alignment peaked in 1998.The December Solstices are now moving into alignment with the dark band at the centre of the Milky Way and this will become exact at the December 2012 solstice.
The Winter Solstice symbolizes the rebirth of the light and the divine spark within us all. It marks the beginning of a solar new cycle and is time for those of us who live in the Southern Hemisphere to celebrate this rebirth and reflect on what we want to achieve in the coming year. This is the logical time to create our New Year resolutions and intentions.
A Simple Solstice Ritual
The most traditional way to celebrate the Solstice is to arise early on the day of June 21 to observe and honour the sunrise. Ideally you will find a place where you can observe the horizon free of buildings and welcome the Sun as he appears. Allow yourself to be filled with wonder and gratitude for the rebirth of the Sun. As the Sun gains strength and power, feel your self being blessed with his light and vitality. Ask for the blessing of the divine masculine for the year ahead.
A special Solstice meal is another wonderful way to honour this energy. This is the time for roast dinners and a roaring fire where a special Yule log was burned to honour the Sun and bring his warmth and radiance into the home. If you don’t have a fire then light gold candle to honour the Sun and invite his blessings into your life and home.
A more intimate ritual… Create a sacred space with candles, incense, meditation and intention. Tune into your inner guidance to find the seeds of new potentials that are stirring within your inner darkness. When you are ready, record the seeds in red or gold ink [as long as they do not seek to influence or harm any other individual] and then burn them in your fire or from your candle. As the paper burns, see your seeds flowering and your potentials manifesting. Give thanks and light your candle whenever you need to refresh your visions and intentions.
Blessed Be!
